Kegels: Tense Your Way To Better Sex

Kegels: Tense Your Way To Better Sex

We all know January is get fit month for many, but if you're not much of a gym bunny then there are still some really simple exercises that can be done anywhere and anytime which can significantly improve your sex life.

Kegels may be most familiar to those of us who have given birth. Indeed, one of my biggest baby-brain moments was when I posted a status on my Facebook wall (instead of the private parenting group it was intended for), asking if anyone would volunteer to do a daily post reminding everyone to do their kegel exercises, as I kept forgetting. The responses from my friends and family were very funny and understanding, and I was glad to have got a few of the uninformed ones googling. Most importantly, I managed to tip a few guys off to the fact that these exercises aren't just for women!

Yepp! Pelvic floor exercises have great benefits for all genders.

American gynaecologist Arnold Kegel was the first to describe these exercises in 1948, and since then they have been used by many to help with numerous different conditions.

The most common conditions which strengthening the pelvic floor helps are:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Anorgasmia
  • Prolapse

However other benefits of regular training are an increase in blood flow to the pelvic region, which can result in it becoming easier to get aroused and reach orgasm. Gaining greater control over this muscle group can also make it much easier for men to sustain erections, and for everyone to experience multiple orgasms.

So how do I get started?

First of all, if you're experiencing any of the aforementioned conditions it's best to speak to your doctor and get everything assessed before starting.

If you are just here for the sexual health benefits, then I recommend checking out the NHS' guide to pelvic floor exercises. They have great tips on locating your pelvic floor muscles, exactly how long to tense them for, and how often.

The most important thing to remember is to take it slow and gradually build it up. These are muscles, just like any other in your body. They can be worn out and over-used very easily. So always keep that in mind!

If you want to incorporate extras into your exercise regime, we stock a number of kegel balls and love eggs. This JOPEN set includes various weights which can be swapped out as your strength increases. Glass and crystal eggs are one of the oldest known methods of training pelvic floor muscles, alongside Ben Wa balls. Or if you need some extra motivation to get tensing, the We-Vibe Jive is a vibrating love egg which can be controlled hands free using the We-Connect™ app.

So next time you're on your way to the gym, make sure you stop by Scandals for your new workout equipment!
